Thomas Kalmaku is an Eskimo originally from Alaska. He moved to Coast City, California and worked for Ferris Aircrafts. He became friends with Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern. He married Tegra and has two children named Keith and Michele Kari.

During the events of Millennium, the Guardian Herupa Hando Hu and the Zamaron Nadia Safir came to Earth to find ten people to propel the planet into the new millennium. Thomas was the ninth to be visited by Herupa and Nadia. Just like all of the chosen, Herupa and Nadia told him in their language: “We have chosen ten people on Earth to advance the human race, and one of the ten is you! The heroes and heroines of Earth, join us in asking you to leave this life and enter the future!” However, Thomas did not want to help them because it meant leaving his family, so he kindly refused their offering.

Nicknamed "Pieface", Thomas often accompanied Hal Jordan during his many silver-age adventures.

His mother Katy Kalmaku was saved by Alan Scott before the Japanese Army invaded the Aleutian Islands (Attu Island) in Young All-Stars #8.

As a mechanic and ally to Hal Jordan, Tom develops a working friendship with Carol Ferris.
