Early Days

Remender grew up in Phoenix, Arizona where he developed affection for comics after seeing the cover of Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #4 in a shop where he used to skate outside, and after he bought it and read it his obsession with comics began. Subsequently he went to manage a comic shop and became a collector of vintage comics. Remender attended the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, but he didn’t feel comfortable so after returning to Phoenix he got a job as an animator in the animation studio of Don Bluth where Remender worked on the movies Anastasia (1997) and Titan A.E. (2000). Later Remender moved to Los Angeles where he continued his career as an animator working on films such as The Iron Giant (1999) and The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000). During this period Remender never forgot his love for comics and his desire to develop stories, and while he was performing his duties as animator he wrote story ideas that later he transcribed into short scenes. Along with some friends created what would become his first published comic: Captain Dingleberry. Remender has said that the intention of this comic was primarily to have fun and fight the monotony of working in animation, and it was not expected to be sold. However, Slave Labor Graphics became interested in publishing the material, and that would be Rick's first experience in the comics business.

Works as Penciler and Inker

Currently Remender is known more for his role as writer, but at the beginning of his career Remender worked as penciler for books such as Bruce Campbell's Man with the Screaming Brain (2005) for Dark Horse, The Last Christmas (2006) for Image Comics and four issues of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2004/2005) for Mirage Studios. Remender also worked as an inker in books such as The Avengers #57-60 (2002-2003) for Marvel Comics and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) for Beckett.

Remender the Writer

According to Remender, at the beginning of his career he saw writing as another creative outlet while working as an artist. During this time, he developed several scripts that would later become some of his most famous to date, including Fear Agent, The End League, Sorrow, and XXXombies.

After the publication of these series, Remender begins to make a name within the industry with work coming in not as an artist, but as a writer. In 2008, he co-authored with Matt Fraction the series Punisher: War Journal, a run that opened the door to sign an exclusive contract with Marvel in 2009. He then went on to introduce the Punisher character to horror elements that is common in several of his works, changing the name of the series to Franken-Castle in January 2010. Currently he writes the ongoing series Uncanny X-Force which has received strong reviews and sales. He is also writing the mini-series Punisher: In The Blood. Rick Remender is also the writer of Uncanny Avengers and Captain America, both under the Marvel NOW! banner.

Remender has recently gained acclaim for his creator-owned work at Image, such as Deadly Class and Black Science. He announced in June 2015 he would be taking a break from Marvel to focus on his creator-owned projects.

Other Media

Remender has adapted his Radical Comics mini-series, The Last Days of American Crime, as a screenplay for film. The actor Sam Worthington is attached to star in the movie, F. Gary Gray (Law Abiding Citizen) is attached to direct, with a release date speculatively set for 2012. Remender's Dark Horse series, Fear Agent, is also being developed for the big screen by Universal, but as of yet no details have emerged about the project.

Remender has worked as a writer for video games such as Dead Space for Electronic Arts, and was the lead writer on the game Bulletstorm for Epic Games.

While working as an illustrator, Remender has created album art for punk/metal bands including: NOFX, 3 Inches of Blood, Pitch Black, Lagwagon, and No Use for a Name.
